The Red Sand Dunes were closer to town and were the second stop of the day. It was good that we had gone later in the afternoon as the scorching sands had cooled somewhat.
The moment we stepped out of the car we were accosted by school-age children trying to get us to rent a plastic mat to slide on, but we declined, preferring to have bare feet and enjoy the experience of watching our feet sink.
The White Sands Dunes were perhaps more pristine, desert-like and breath-taking but the Red Dunes had a distinct beauty of their own. With a backdrop of blue ocean and blue sky they were equally stunning. There was something quite biblical about them. We ended up spending quite a bit of time walking up and down the hillocks, mesmerized by the sliding sand.
